Wake of Vultures and why I don’t recommend books

Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen

I finished reading Wake of Vultures, by Lila Bowen, as part of my fantasy-reading challenge. I think it was a short book, because it didn’t take long to read. (Another thing I dislike about kindle books is that you can’t get a feeling for how long they are by their thickness.)

Read on to hear what Sebastian (my writer half) and Rain (my reader half) thought of Wake of Vultures. But first, why I don’t want to recommend books to you. (Thanks to Brian Wright for the inspiration for this post. And no hard feelings, promise.)

A dumpster dive through my bookmarks

dumpster dive bookmarks: airshipThere was a time when I used to save bookmarks in Chrome into informatively labelled folders.

That time ended years ago.

Since then, I’ve been throwing everything I want to save into a melting pot called “Other bookmarks”. It’s true, these are the bookmarks that are not in the organised folders, which makes them “other”. (Except for the ones that are duplicates, which are not “other”.) Still, as labels go it’s not especially helpful.

Not a book review of The Obelisk Gate

A week ago I wrote a post that was not a book review of The Star-Touched Queen. On a similar vein, this isn’t a book review of The Obelisk Gate, by N. K. Jemisin. And if you can’t figure out why I’m suddenly (not) reviewing books, it’s all explained here.

The Obelisk Gate by N K Jemisin

The Obelisk Gate is the second book in the Broken Earth series, and almost anything I can say about the plot will be a spoiler for the first book, so I won’t say anything.

Sorry, I already have too many friends

Too many friends: swan

I had a wonderful day with you today, though I really shouldn’t have eaten so much apple pie. The swans would have liked more.

Again next week? I’d love to.

You want to be friends?

A cloud blocks the sun and the drone of flies competes with the noise of the highway.

Sorry, I already mumble mumble.

What?

I already have too many friends.

Not a book review of The Star-Touched Queen

This is not a book review, but if it were it would be a review of The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani ChokshiYou may recall that in my last post I committed to reading four recent (in a loose sense of the word) fantasy novels in February.

Easy, right? It’s not uncommon for me to finish a book in a day or two, so four in a month gives me 22 days’ leeway. Except February is a short month, which takes me down to 20 days, and I didn’t start until the 7th, so 14 days.

I also have two books I hope to beta read this month, which takes much longer than normal reading, so say 5 days apiece, and I’m down to 4 days’ leeway.
